EEG (Electroencephalogram)

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a diagnostic test used to measure electrical activity in the brain. It plays a crucial role in evaluating seizures, epilepsy, unexplained loss of consciousness, abnormal movements, sleep disorders, and certain cognitive disturbances. In Dubai and across the UAE, EEG services are widely utilized within neurology departments to support accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

EEG involves placing small electrodes on the scalp to record brain wave patterns. The test is non-invasive, painless, and typically completed within 20 to 60 minutes. In some cases, prolonged or sleep-deprived EEG monitoring may be recommended to capture intermittent abnormalities.

EEG is most commonly used in epilepsy evaluation. Abnormal electrical discharges may confirm seizure disorders and help classify seizure type, guiding medication selection. It is also valuable in monitoring treatment response and assessing breakthrough seizures.

In addition to epilepsy, EEG may assist in evaluating encephalopathy, brain infections, head injury, and altered mental status. Pediatric EEG studies are frequently performed for children with developmental delay or suspected seizure activity.

Interpretation requires specialized expertise. Neurologists analyze waveform patterns, background rhythms, and spike activity to identify abnormalities. Results are integrated with clinical findings and imaging studies for comprehensive diagnosis.

EEG safety is high, with minimal risk. Occasionally, flashing lights or hyperventilation may be used during testing to provoke abnormal patterns when clinically appropriate.

In modern neuroscience centers in the UAE, EEG is integrated with advanced imaging and neurophysiological testing. Timely diagnosis allows prompt initiation or adjustment of anti-epileptic medications.

EEG remains a cornerstone tool in neurological diagnostics. Through accurate interpretation and clinical correlation, it supports effective management of seizure disorders and other brain-related conditions.
