Sinusitis (Mild)
Mild sinusitis is a common primary care condition characterized by inflammation of the sinus cavities, often following a viral upper respiratory infection. In Dubai and across the UAE, environmental factors such as dust exposure, air conditioning, and seasonal allergies can contribute to sinus inflammation.
Patients typically present with facial pressure, nasal congestion, thick nasal discharge, headache, postnasal drip, reduced sense of smell, and mild fever. Symptoms lasting less than 10 days are usually viral, while prolonged symptoms may indicate bacterial involvement.
Primary care evaluation includes clinical examination of nasal passages, sinus tenderness assessment, and review of symptom duration. Imaging is rarely required in uncomplicated mild sinusitis.
Management focuses on symptomatic relief. Saline nasal irrigation helps clear mucus and reduce congestion. Nasal corticosteroid sprays reduce inflammation. Pain relievers address facial discomfort. Antibiotics are reserved for cases with persistent symptoms beyond 10 days or worsening after initial improvement.
Hydration and steam inhalation may provide additional relief. Patients with allergic rhinitis may benefit from antihistamines or allergy management plans.
Complications are rare in mild cases but can include chronic sinusitis or spread of infection if untreated. Warning signs such as high fever, vision changes, or severe swelling require urgent evaluation.
In the UAE, preventive strategies include managing allergies, avoiding environmental triggers, and maintaining indoor air quality.
Mild sinusitis generally resolves within one to two weeks with appropriate supportive care. Primary care physicians ensure accurate diagnosis, rational medication use, and prevention of complications.
