Neck Pain
Neck pain is a common musculoskeletal complaint encountered in primary care clinics across Dubai and the UAE. It affects individuals of various age groups and is frequently associated with prolonged desk work, excessive screen time, poor posture, improper sleeping positions, stress-related muscle tension, and sudden strain injuries. While most cases are mechanical and self-limiting, timely evaluation ensures early relief and prevention of chronic complications.
Patients typically describe stiffness, localized pain at the back or sides of the neck, reduced range of motion, headaches originating from the neck (cervicogenic headaches), or pain radiating to the shoulders or upper arms. In certain cases, tingling or numbness in the arms may suggest nerve involvement due to cervical disc irritation or muscle spasm compressing nearby structures.
Primary care assessment begins with a detailed history of symptom onset, occupation, recent activities, posture habits, and any history of trauma. A focused physical examination evaluates muscle tenderness, spinal alignment, neurological function, and range of motion. Red-flag symptoms such as severe trauma, progressive neurological weakness, unexplained weight loss, fever, or persistent night pain warrant urgent specialist referral and imaging.
For uncomplicated neck pain, imaging is generally unnecessary during the initial stages. Management focuses on conservative therapy. Short-term use of anti-inflammatory medications and muscle relaxants can help relieve pain and stiffness. Local heat therapy, gentle stretching exercises, and posture correction significantly improve recovery.
Ergonomic modifications play a crucial role in the UAE’s office-based workforce. Adjusting desk height, monitor level, and chair support can prevent recurrent strain. Patients are encouraged to take regular breaks from prolonged sitting and incorporate neck mobility exercises throughout the day.
Stress management is also important, as emotional stress often leads to increased muscle tension in the neck and shoulders. Relaxation techniques, breathing exercises, and physical activity contribute to overall symptom improvement.
In cases of persistent symptoms, referral to physiotherapy may be advised for guided rehabilitation and strengthening exercises. Most acute neck pain resolves within a few weeks with appropriate management.
Neck pain is usually benign but can impact productivity and quality of life. Through early assessment, conservative treatment, and preventive lifestyle adjustments, primary care physicians help patients achieve lasting relief and avoid chronic discomfort.
