Interstitial Lung Disease

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) encompasses a group of disorders characterized by inflammation and scarring of the lung tissue surrounding the air sacs. This scarring can impair oxygen transfer and lead to progressive shortness of breath. ILD includes conditions such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, connective tissue–related lung disease, and occupational exposure–related fibrosis. Early diagnosis is essential, as timely intervention can slow progression and preserve lung function.

Patients often present with gradually worsening breathlessness, persistent dry cough, and reduced exercise tolerance. Symptoms may develop insidiously, leading to delayed presentation. Accurate diagnosis requires detailed clinical history, high-resolution imaging, pulmonary function testing, and, in selected cases, multidisciplinary review involving radiologists and rheumatologists.

UAE tertiary pulmonology centers utilize high-resolution computed tomography to identify characteristic patterns of lung scarring. Pulmonary function tests assess restrictive ventilatory defects and diffusion capacity impairment. In complex cases, multidisciplinary ILD boards evaluate imaging, clinical findings, and laboratory data to reach consensus diagnosis.

Management strategies focus on slowing disease progression, managing symptoms, and preventing complications. Structured follow-up programs monitor lung function trends, oxygen levels, and exercise capacity. Rehabilitation programs and oxygen evaluation pathways may be integrated when indicated. Because ILD may be associated with autoimmune conditions, coordinated care with rheumatology services enhances comprehensive management.

Advanced tertiary centers in the UAE also provide evaluation for lung transplantation in carefully selected patients with progressive disease. Ongoing monitoring and multidisciplinary collaboration are central to optimizing long-term outcomes.

Interstitial lung disease services across the UAE align with international respiratory medicine standards, emphasizing early detection, advanced imaging, and coordinated specialty care. Through structured evaluation and tertiary expertise, patients receive individualized care plans aimed at preserving respiratory function and quality of life.
