Fungal Skin Infections

Fungal skin infections are common dermatological conditions caused by the overgrowth of fungi that normally exist on the skin or are acquired from external sources. These infections thrive in warm, moist environments and commonly affect the skin, scalp, nails, and body folds. While generally not life-threatening, fungal infections can be persistent, recurrent, and uncomfortable if not properly treated.

Common fungal skin infections include dermatophyte infections affecting the feet, groin, body, and scalp, as well as yeast infections caused by Candida species. Risk factors include excessive sweating, tight clothing, diabetes, obesity, weakened immunity, and prolonged antibiotic use. Poor ventilation and shared environments such as gyms and swimming pools also contribute to transmission.

Clinical presentation varies depending on the site and organism involved. Symptoms may include itching, redness, scaling, peeling, cracking, and discoloration of the skin. In nail infections, thickening, brittleness, and color changes are common. Diagnosis is typically based on clinical appearance, supported by microscopic examination or laboratory testing when required.

Management involves antifungal therapy tailored to the infection site and severity, along with hygiene measures and lifestyle modifications to prevent recurrence. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment help reduce spread and chronicity.
