Who is a Candidate for Bariatric Surgery?

Obesity is a condition that is associated with having an excess of body fat, defined by genetic and environmental factors that are difficult to control when dieting. Obesity is classified as having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or greater. Obesity increases your risk of developing related conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea, to name a few. Many individuals are affected by obesity and are not aware of it.

Qualifications for bariatric surgery in most areas include:

    1. For BMI>30 and stride achieve a healthy weight loss sustained for a period of 1 year
    2. BMI ≥33 with a co-morbidities such as type II diabetes (T2DM), hypertension, sleep apnea and other respiratory disorders, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, osteoarthritis, lipid abnormalities, gastrointestinal disorders, or heart disease.
    3. BMI ≥ 35 and without any other medical complications.
